Some consular services, as listed below, can also be obtained by application through mail. In such cases, the applicant must send a self addressed, postage paid envelope for return service. Documents sent without a pre-paid self-addressed envelope are not processed.
Consular Services offered by Mail
Application forms for the following consular services are received and delivered by mail:
- Issuance of a new passport against expired (10 years)/damaged/page exhausted passport ;
- Renewal of passport ;
- Issuance of Visa (after consultation with the consular officer);
- Endorsement of "No Visa Required (NVR) seal;
- Attestation/Legalisation of documents (which have prior authentication of the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry or the US Department of State);
- Issuance of alive certificates to retired government servants (who reside outside New York City).
However, on receipt of an application, the Consular Officer may ask for an interview of the applicant.
Consular Services NOT offered by Mail
The following services are not offered by mail:
- Issuance of new passport against a lost/stolen/destroyed passport;
- Issuance of new passport to children who were earlier endorsed in their mother's passport;
- Issuance of birth and other certificates;
- Attestation/Legalization of documents, which do not have the prior authentication of either the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the US Department of State.
How to use the Mail-in Services
In case the applicant chooses to apply by mail, he/she must send a self addressed, postage paid envelop for return service. The applicants are advised to send pre-paid envelopes from USPS, UPS, DHL, FedEx etc. for efficient and secured service.
In case of using USPS (United States Postal Service, operated by the US government), the applicants are advised to go for mailing services which have confirmation tracking number or bar code. These include Express mail, Priority mail (with signature confirmation or delivery confirmation tracking number) or Certified mail services. The tracking number or bar code should be preserved for information on the status of delivery/receipt of the mail.
- Express mails are received within one day and the cost of sending an envelope (weighing half pound (about 3 passports) is around US $ 18.50 each way.
- Priority mails do not have any weight limitation and are received within 3-4 days. Priority mails with signature confirmation would cost around US $ 8.50 each way. Priority mail with delivery confirmation would cost US $ 5.10 each way.
- Certified mails are received within 4-5 days and the cost of sending an envelope weighing half pound (about 3 passports) would be around US $ 8 each way.

Applicants may also choose the services from private postal operators like UPS, FedEx, DHL for sending and receiving mails. In all cases, the tracking number or bar code should be preserved carefully for reference in case of misplacement/delay in delivery or receipt.
